Awkward!

Every Christmas, I seem to be on the receiving end of an “awkwaaaaard!” gift.  There was our first Christmas as newlyweds when my mom gave us a game of Twister, along with two nudges and a wink. Thanks, Mom.

Then, there was the bedroom pillow my stepdad gave us that said “Tonight” on one side and “Not Tonight” on the other.  Thanks, Rick.  Each to be opened in a room full of those nearest and dearest to us, for laughs to be had at my modesty’s expense.  These gifts, they were at least given in jest.

This year’s was not in jest, however, and was not given by my parents.  The culprit: my husband.

Christmas morning, I was the lucky recipient of this:

DSC_0283…which I opened in front of the whole family, including my Grandma-happy mother.

DSC_0282{In case you couldn’t read the title…}

Might I add, this gift was preceded five minutes earlier by a gift card to Victoria’s Secret. “It’s for perfume!,” says Tyler.

Uh-huh.  Perfume.

To be fair, I actually wanted a book like this—I just didn’t expect to open it up on Christmas morning!  Imagine the color of my face when everyone around eagerly watched to see what I had opened that made my eyebrows shoot up in such a way…

The explanation: Though I know a decent amount about nutrition and development from my educational background, I really don’t know THAT much.  I for sure know way less than any pregnancy-experienced person out there.  And after an unplanned “scare” a few months ago…

{Interruption: For the record, I hate to use that word because I realize what can be called a “scare” to one would be a long awaited miracle to another… So I don’t mean to use it insensitively… By scare, I mean “surprise!”}

After an unplanned…potentially-surprise!…moment, I decided I needed to know a little more.  Had I actually been pregnant, that kiddo would’ve been conceived while I was taking birth control, NOT taking vitamins, drinking wine, taking headache medicine {the latter two unrelated…}, using prescription skin cream…not to mention the extra 5 {or 10} lbs that seem to have taken residence on my hips since July.  I don’t know much, but I know I love you but I know enough about folic acid, spina bifida, and the first 28 days of fetal development to know I would’ve spent the next nine months worrying my little brains out…

So, despite the incessant jokes from my brother and SIL {“What, you don’t know how to get pregnant??”}, and just as the title implies, this book has nothing to do with actually getting pregnant—it’s all about preparing your body for carrying a baby and creating the right internal environment for such a task.  I’m only a few chapters in, but I’m really enjoying it!  My science brain is soaking up all of the medical explanations on why I need more of this and less of that and I really appreciate the practicality of this doctor’s point of view…

To be fair, I am well aware that a bajillion, healthy, fully-developed surprise! babies are delivered everyday, without planning, without a special diet, so I’m not committing to some OCD lifestyle, convinced that my kid will be blind with ADHD if I have one serving of food with a glycemic index above 50.  {And if you know me, you know I’m way too laid back for that anyway.}  However, if there are things I can do now, months {Did you hear that?  Months, Judy…} before we even think about, considering, possibly moving in the baby direction, that can help prepare a healthy, fertile environment, then I wanna know about ‘em!

And so, I read…

To conclude, this will likely be the last of the baby talk from me {Yes, I realize I offered up the whole convo…}.  One never knows what the baby-makin’ process holds—a short path or a heartbreaking road, miscarriages or healthy growth, a single or triplets!—so you probably won’t hear anymore big announcements from me until the BIG announcement.  And rest assured, that is a long way away… A long, long way away.

{But you never know what’s happening behind closed doors…}

So, here’s to awkward Christmas gifts!  Did anyone else open any face-flushing gifts last weekend??

Why fly?

When you have a personal chauffeur who will drive you from Atlanta to Arlington, whose only request for compensation is Chick Fil A sandwhich preparation from the passenger seat?

My thoughts exactly.

Happy travels and post-holiday recovery from I-85! We'll chat later this week about awkward Christmas presents, Ballard Backroom, and New Year's plans...

How to host a cookie swap…

Step 1. Find a co-host… You split up the cooking, the To-Do list, the costs, AND you merge two groups of friends which makes for lots of new chatter at the party.  I highly recommend it.

Step 2. Clean the house top to bottom… {If out of town the weekend prior, make your husband do it.}

Step 3. While out of town, have flight cancelled 24 hours prior to party.

Step 4. Elevate heart rate and blood pressure.  Beeline for customer service.  Stand in line for an hour. Make 1800 phone calls.  Rebook flight…

Step 5. Once on plane, sit on runway for three hours waiting for de-icing.

Step 6.  Upon arrival home, immediately {lovingly} order husband around.  Stay up until 1am implementing to-do list…

Step 7.  Make gift bags for guests to collect their cookies in… {Image compliments of the Graphics Fairy.  Have I mentioned I love her site?}

DSC_0153

Step 8: Implement voting system… Assign every cookie a number and every guest one “vote” card to place in the cookie’s envelope they deem the best.

DSC_0177

Step 8. Light the candles, start the music, pour the wine…

Step 9. Talk, introduce, chat, socialize, discuss, politely nod head, conversate, laugh…

DSC_0192DSC_0195

Step 10. Admire the cookies…

Step 11. EAT the cookies…

Step 12. VOTE!

DSC_0193DSC_0194

Step 13.  Announce the BEST cookie at the first annual Grassmeyer-Gee cookie swap: The Red Velvet!  Congratulations Cora!

The cookie swap was a success—it was a great opportunity for a bunch of girls to get together over the holidays.  We held it on a weeknight, so no one felt pressure to be too dressy or stay too late, we had a great dinner and even better desserts!  And it was so fun to introduce different groups of friends and hang out with new ones.  We also swapped recipes of all the great cookies—almond cookies, toffee ones, red velvet, pine bark, macaroons, marshmallow coconuts, peanut butter chocolate kisses…. They were soooo good.  What’s Christmas without a five lb weight gain, right?  I like to think we just helped start the season off right!

Present day, Tyler and I are in Savannah with my family, heading up to Atlanta tomorrow where all the branches will come together for the weekend.  DC is forecasted to have a white Christmas, so I was a little bummed to be heading to warmer climates, but it turns out Atlanta is forecasted with snow so I’m happy for that.  I’m a little behind on blogging and sharing about regular “life stuff”—there is plenty to update you on come January 1.

Y’all have a very merry Christmas—I so appreciate sharing my little life with you on here and in turn, meeting and reading about all of you.

Merry Christmas.

Girls just wanna have fun…

How do you people find the time to blog during the holidays??  Sheesh!  I’m overwhelmed to say the least, though T and I did have a productive weekend—both socially and Christmastime-related-errand-running-wise.  Still, I’ve had this guilty blogger cloud following me everywhere and I have GOT to make it go away…

I’ve been meaning to fill y’all in on our fabulous girls weekend I mentioned last week.  As I said, my grandmother celebrated her 80th 65th birthday, so my mom and my aunt planned a great weekend for all of the women and ladies and girls (females…) in our family and rented a cabin in the mountains of north Georgia.  We have never had any weekend like this in our family and I think we’re already ready to plan the next one.  We had a blast—a low-key, laid-back blast.

I’ll let the pictures tell most of the story but you know I can’t stay quiet for long…

Aunt Debbie and Grandmommy {some people also call her “Jane”} ready to go.And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my mom…Becky, Angie, and I drove up later that night with sleepy Halley Jane and Abby Grace in tow {Good thing I don’t have a baby because that kid would’ve been strapped to the roof…}.Friday morning was the birthday girl’s big day, so decorations were in order… We only left the house once to celebrate in town with a birthday lunch…DSC_0019You’re not a birthday girl without your crown!The queen and her maidens…DSC_0017I think it’s too soon for solids, but Abby was daring enough to try her first taste of table…DSC_0021Which Halley celebrated… “High five mom!”The Jaros girls.It would just take entirely too long to explain to you why my grandmother is taking her picture with Blue Ridge’s very own Domino’s delivery man…Friday night, things got really crazy…I mean, really. Out of hand.I’m telling you… Insane.I probably hadn’t done a puzzle since 3rd grade, but it was so fun!We took some time to celebrate the Queen Mum further (with red velvet cake, no less…).DSC_0052She wasn’t quite dressed for the occasion, though, so we thought this hat was in order.DSC_0057And of course, a feather boa, gloves, and a ring… She was a great sport!Saturday morning brought more puzzles… {I’m pretty sure I never changed out of my PJs... Aren’t those the best days?}

DSC_0008Truer words were never spoken…DSC_0006And even though this weekend was all about Grandmommy, there was still lots of baby love to go around…DSC_0060Breakfast with Jammie deserves a round of applause…DSC_0064Future sisters in law!  My cousin Kelsey (left) and Jessica, who will marry into the family next June (Just a technicality really, she’s already part of the gang.)DSC_0065

DSC_0066

DSC_0144Chocolate!!DSC_0068Becky and I woke up early one morning (thank you, Halley) to make homemade cinnamon rolls, only to realize we’d forgotten the cinnamon.  On top of that, our yeast didn’t really rise, but they still tasted great.  Lesson learned: it’s REALLY hard to screw up cinnamon rolls. Or cinnamon-less cinnamon rolls.DSC_0069DSC_0124

The babies dressed up to pose for Christmas pictures…

DSC_0145And there was some wine involved…DSC_0148And thanks to a spirited game of Musical Catch Phrase (though the “spirited” part may not come across in this picture…), we now have a universal gesture for the word “birth” to be shared at family gatherings for years to come… I will not demonstrate.

Other highlights: the Georgia and Tennessee fans were subjected to watching the Heisman ceremony with all of the Auburn fans, my sister and I slept in bunk beds for the first time since Christmas Eve 1996 {and laid in bed and giggled while texting each other every night because Halley was also sleeping in the same room and we couldn’t talk…}, we carried an old family tradition of playing Pictionary onto the younger generation {who must be fast learners because they full on HANDLED us in a truly embarrassing display of sketching…}, and I ate twice my body weight in those delicious homemade cheese crackers with the nuts in them…the ones that you roll the dough into a log and cut slices off {ala store-bought sugar cookie style}…the ones that taste like they were basted in butter by a heavenly host.  Those things.  Along with lots of dry Chardonnay.  Twice my body weight.  {If I shared with you that Cheez-Its and apple juice was my favorite childhood snack, would this all make sense?}

So ANYWAY, we ate a lot and laughed a lot and cooked a lot, sipped wine a lot and puzzled a lot… And though it was just simple stuff, it was all laced with love and celebration for Jane Jaros—the matriarch of our family.  To sit in a room and laugh with 12 women who love each other so much, and realize that we all started with her, that our families and future families are all rooted in the love and faith and principles that are hers is a really special thing.  It inspires me to be a better woman, a better wife, a better follower of my faith to ensure that I uphold her legacy in my own family.

I love you Grandmommy. {And you, Monroe/Smith/Everette/Copetillo girls!  Y’all busy next weekend?}

O’ Christmas Tree…

Tyler is just never as enthusiastic about getting a tree every year as I am… He’s always begging to get a fake one and I just tell him he’s a crazy man and keep walkin’.

It must have something to do with his December chore…

Christmas Tour of Homes

Christmas tour collage

I’m on a race against the clock to get this up before December 13th is over!  After a great weekend in the mountains, my week started off with a bang with crazy travel (i.e. snow and cancelled flights in GEORGIA) and hosting a cookie swap tonight at my house.  Tomorrow holds a full schedule of patients and my Bible study’s Secret Santa party at my house, so the mayhem’s not over!

Anywho, all of the festivities translate to a fully decorated house, so I’m excited to share!  I LOVE Christmas and I love decorating for it, so I’m always trying to find the balance in having a touch of the season in every room without my house feeling like the North Pole.  As you know, we moved to a bigger space in July so I have loved having the extra nooks & crannies to fill…

There are the big spots like…

The staircase…

The living room “mantle”…

DSC_0197The tree…DSC_0199{Isn’t it prettier without the flash?}

There are the medium spots like…

DSC_0150

This mirror that sits at the bottom of the stairs… {I always display last year’s cards and gradually replace them as this year’s come in.}

DSC_0159

This window that hold my mistreatments… {A $2 bag of cinnamon scented pinecones from Michael’s and some twine… I seem to have spotted hanging pinecones in every catalog I’ve come across this season, so I think I’m on trend.}

And then there are the small touches I like to have sitting in the nooks & crannies, like…

DSC_0165

This $7 garage sale bucket that I a-d-o-r-e and always have filled with seasonal items…

The ornaments set throughout the house…

The wreaths… {$5 Coffee filter wreath as shared by Nester.  I soaked my filters in coffee and dried them in the oven before making it.  I love how the edges turned out…}

{$3 grapevine wreath plus free tree trimmings…}

{Our office—I don’t think I’ve ever showed it to you…}

DSC_0172

I have admitted before, I love this season for all of the right and wrong reasons.  But I also like to believe that my desire to have the decorations comes out of my desire to create a sanctuary for my family and my desire to carry on the traditions of love in which we both grew up.  And those traditions and love are all rooted in our love and celebration of a King, a Savior in the form of a baby.

Thanks for stopping by, visitors and faithful friends alike!  Have a very Merry Christmas everyone.
